The 5th Annual Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair
Thank you for supporting the 5th Annual Feria Del Libro! It was a huge success!
The renowned feria/fair was held on June 2nd, 2007 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Los Angeles City Hall, on Main Street between 1st and Temple Streets. Nearly 30,000 family and friends enjoyed a day of storytelling, music, good food, activities for the youth, meeting authors, access to important community and college information, and of course buying books from quality book vendors.
Families In Schools is pleased to say that the fifth annual Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair, held on the grounds of the Los Angeles City Hall was a great success by all accounts. What started as an effort to increase awareness of the importance of books and reading in Boyle Heights, a community with few bookstores or access to libraries, grew from an event that drew about 3,000 people in 2003 to one that drew over 15,000 in 2006 and nearly doubling these numbers in 2007. Three out of four attendees interviewed told us they had attended the feria/fair in previous years and that they plan to attend next year. This ‘repeat business’ tells us that this is an event the community looks forward to and enjoys.
The Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair grew out of the realization that access to books is a significant determinant of academic and future success. Children who grow up surrounded by books and who are encouraged to read regularly from a young age, often read more, and better, and have higher performance in school and later in life. The Feria del Libro: A family book fair provides a setting and opportunity where families can purchase books and mix among book vendors and authors, thus helping to develop a strong appetite for owning books and for improving their reading skills.
The Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair is produced by Families In Schools in partnership with the Boyle Heights Learning Collaborative, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the City of Los Angeles. The founding sponsors are La Opinión and Washington Mutual. Other sponsors include Disney, Telemundo, Target, and Hudson Books. Other supporting organizations include LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell, Alliance for a Better Community (ABC), and LA’s Best.
